Supporting Teenagers Through Life's Challenges

Being a teenager today is harder than ever. Between academic pressure, social media, identity development, family dynamics, and the transition toward adulthood, adolescents face a unique set of challenges that can feel overwhelming — and that adults don't always fully understand.

At Palmero Counselling, we offer specialized therapy for teens aged 13–17 in Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Grimsby, and virtually across Ontario. Our registered psychotherapist Ellis Palmero creates a warm, non-judgmental, and genuinely teen-friendly space where young people can talk openly about what they're going through — without fear of judgment or having their feelings dismissed.

What Brings Teens to Therapy?

Teenagers come to therapy for many different reasons. Some are struggling with a specific issue; others just feel like something is "off" and they can't quite name it. Common reasons teens seek therapy include:

  • Anxiety — worry, panic, social anxiety, or school-related stress
  • Depression — persistent sadness, low motivation, or loss of interest
  • Academic pressure and performance anxiety
  • Friendship difficulties, social exclusion, or bullying
  • Family conflict or changes (divorce, blended families, moving)
  • Identity questions — including gender identity and sexual orientation
  • Low self-esteem or negative body image
  • Grief and loss
  • Trauma or difficult past experiences
  • Anger management and emotional regulation
  • Navigating relationships and peer pressure

If your teen is struggling — or if you're a teenager reading this yourself — know that reaching out for support is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Our Approach to Teen Therapy

Working with teenagers requires a different approach than adult therapy. We meet teens where they are — using language, examples, and techniques that are relevant and relatable to their experience. Our approach is collaborative, strengths-based, and always respectful of the teen's autonomy and perspective.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is adapted for teens to help them understand the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. CBT gives teenagers practical tools to manage anxiety, challenge negative thinking, and build healthier coping strategies.

Mindfulness and Emotional Regulation Skills help teens develop greater awareness of their emotions and learn to respond rather than react. These skills are particularly valuable for teens who struggle with intense emotions, impulsivity, or stress.

Narrative Therapy helps teens explore and rewrite the stories they tell about themselves — moving away from problem-saturated identities toward a stronger sense of who they are and who they want to become.

Solution-Focused Approaches help teens identify their own strengths and resources, and build on what is already working in their lives.

"Every teenager deserves a space where they can be completely honest — without worrying about disappointing anyone or being told how they should feel. That's what therapy offers."

A Note for Parents

We understand that as a parent, watching your teenager struggle can be deeply worrying. You want to help, but you may not always know how. Therapy can be a powerful complement to your support at home.

Confidentiality is an important part of teen therapy — teens need to know they can speak freely. We will discuss with you and your teen what level of parental involvement is appropriate. In some cases, occasional family sessions or parent check-ins may be recommended. Our goal is always to support the whole family system while keeping the teen's trust and wellbeing at the centre.
